Partnering with the Kenamatewin Native Learning Centre, Niisaachewan’s Education Department will be offering an opportunity to write the GED Test. This is free of charge for the participants.

The Nibi Curriculum will outline approaches and resources to engage with water teachings and responsibilities to water. The curriculum will provide educational materials to share the principles and teachings from by the Anishinaabe Nation in Treaty #3 and found in the Treaty #3 Nibi Declaration. The curriculum will support the Nibi Declaration through providing access to youth and others, for Treaty #3 members and everyone who wants to learn more and develop their relationship with Nibi. It will be focused on Anishinaabe teachings from Treaty #3 and relevant to the Lake of the Woods Watershed.

The materials developed in the Treaty #3 Nibi Curriculum will be adaptable to In person or virtual mediums of learning as well as groups/classrooms or for individuals whom want to learn on their own. The materials in the Curriculum will address both Indigenous knowledge systems and non-Indigenous systems (including governance and scientific information) and compiled materials to date will be shared with the successful applicant. Written material will be made available on a website and may be shared through printed forms as well.

The Territorial Planning Unit, Decolonizing Water and Treaty #3 Women’s Council are looking to continue the development of supporting materials and the implementation of the Treaty #3 Nibi Declaration through the Nibi Curriculum.

Niisaachewan still does not have school bus services and the odds of having a school bus this year are looking very bleak. We are currently doing what we can to accommodate the need for student transportation. In the meantime we are putting the onus on parents/caregivers to transport their child(ren) to/from school due to inadequate bus service for our community. Niisaachewan has always operated under the policy that school bus transportation is a privilege and not a right.

The Eligibility Requirements for Student Transportation Services & are as follows: Only parents/caregivers with no means of transportation are eligible for student transportation services, as seating is limited.

Typically, parents/caregivers with a license & insured vehicle are expected to drive their child(ren) to & from school. However, if you have a viable reason as to why you are unable to provide school transportation for your child(ren) and need to use Student Transportation Services, the Education Director requires proof & documentation. Acceptable proof is a work schedule, which must be provided weekly if your work scheduling changes week to week. Your schedule must come from your actual place of employment. Student Transportation Service is not a taxi service.

If a parent/caregiver who drives their child(ren) to/from school will be late dropping off/picking up their child(ren), the NAN Van Driver will not pickup/drop-off those child(ren). The parent/caregiver is responsible for making necessary arrangements in that situation. For families using Student Transportation Services, a registration/waiver form will need to be signed. Forms will be issued to these families soon.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Note: We are offering a very small incentive for families driving their children to/from school. You must be transporting your children to/from in your personal vehicle to be eligible for this incentive and this will be monitored. If you have a family member on-reserve who is driving your child(ren), they will receive the incentive.

My name is Anna Tran, I am a recent graduate from McMaster University. I am reaching out today on behalf of my team at the Parsec Youth Network (PYN) to share a recent initiative of mine. We would love to be given the opportunity to help support the youth of First Nation communities by providing free online tutoring services to any student or family who may be interested.

The PYN is a student-led non-profit run entirely on volunteers, which I co-founded in 2015. In mid-March of this year, we launched a free online tutoring program for grade-school students in Canada to help make learning more manageable and enjoyable during the COVID-19 pandemic. We have since gathered over 900 wonderful volunteers who have committed to dedicating time out of their days to become tutors, and have been able to offer dozens of students homework help, academic advising, and general educational sessions, all through free one-on-one tutoring.

Our tutors can not only provide academic support for students and help alleviate some stress for their parents/guardians, but also some much-needed social support during these challenging times of social distancing and isolation as many schools continue to be on lock-down. This program will continue well into the summer months, and into the next academic year as well. We are also in the midst of planning virtual summer workshops to fill in some of the gaps left behind by the cancellation of many summer recreational activities. Should there be any issues with lack of access to an electronic device, we can work to collaborate with other organizations which may provide these devices to develop a solution that we can integrate into our program.

I would therefore love to extend this free service to you and your community, and hope that you can help us spread the word by connecting us to the right people who may find this program to be a valuable resource. If you would like to learn more about our program, our tutors, partnerships, and news coverage, you can visit our website at https://parsecyouthnet.weebly.com/tutoring.html. I would also be more than happy to call and discuss, if interested.

Please let me know if this sounds like something you believe can benefit with greater outreach to the youth in your community. I look forward to hearing your thoughts.
