On the evening of Sunday, September 6th, 2020 during the last day of One-Man Lake Walleye Classic in Wabaseemoong First Nation, three vessels failed to report to weigh in. One vessel was able to make its way back and the fishermen reported that the other 2 vessels were stranded on the far side of the lake due to the storm and rough waters.
Treaty Three Police Service, with the assistance of three individuals searched for the overdue boaters. After several hours of searching, the missing boaters were located and transported back to Goshawk Landing in the police vessel. These boaters recognized the danger of traveling during a storm, so tucked their vessels in a safe location and planned to spend the night on an island.
Treaty Three Police Service would like to acknowledge the assistance of Barry Bennett and Rod Bencharski. The third volunteer was local Wabaseemoong member James McDonald. All had been participants of the Fishing Derby and did not hesitate to help with the search.
Treaty Three Police Service reminds boaters not to go out in a boat during a storm. If you are on the water and you see bad weather approaching, head for shore immediately. Always check the marine forecast before leaving for a day of boating and listen to weather reports during your cruise.
